Massachusetts Earthquake Insurance, Do You Need It?

What do think of when you see pictures of homes devasted by earthquakes?

My first thought is that I hope the owners had added earthquake insurance to their home, tenant or condo policy. That's right, the peril of eathquake is not included in standard policies! In order to be covered, you need to add the coverage to your Massachusetts policy.

Most people don't think that an earthquake can happen around here, but they occasionally do. Here is what the experts at Weston Obeservtory have to say. Have there been multiple HUGE earthquakes? No. Have they caused damage in the past? Yes. The Cape Ann earthquake of 1755 was roughly a 6.0 magnitude. Could your house handle a 6.2 earthquake? Who knows? The big question is whether it is worth it or not to add this coverage to your policy. The cost varies and is more expensive if you have a house of brick construction. You need to call your agent and ask that they quote the massachusetts earthquake insurance coverage for you, then you can weigh the cost versus the risk.

What if that was your car in this picture, smooshed by falling bricks, triggered from an earthquake, is that covered? It would be if you have comprehensive insurance coverage. Again, there is no set cost, it varies in each situation. But the good news is, comprehensive covers you for a variety of other things as well, including fire, theft, vandalism and glass damage.

If we ever do have a large earthquake, I hope that there is no damage or any injuries. Just to help keep you safe, MEMA has the following advice about what to.
